As part of the permit-to-install issued to SunCoke Energy Middletown Operations (formerly known as the Middletown Coke Company), the facility was required to set-up monitors to the measure the concentrations in the air of particulate matter 2.5 microns and smaller (PM2.5), particulate matter 10 microns and smaller (PM10), sulfur dioxide, and various volatile organic hazardous air pollutants. One monitoring site is located on Yankee Road, east of the facility, another site is at Amanda Elementary on Oxford State Road.
The PM2.5, PM10, and sulfur dioxide monitors are required to be operated for a minimum of five years after start-up of the facility. The volatile organic hazardous air pollutants monitors are to be operated for a minimum of two years after start-up of the facility.
A third monitoring site monitoring for sulfur dioxide was added in 2013 as a result of a legal settlement. It is located on MADE Industrial Drive off Yankee Road.
